He Made Us for This

The earth from space, with text from Psalm 8:3-4

It’s no surprise that David was wonder-struck by the splendour of the night sky as he wrote Psalm 8. And he didn’t know half of what we do today!

In such a vast universe, what significance could we possibly have? And yet we do.

David goes on to marvel at how we’ve been made rulers over this wondrous creation. God didn’t glance around his immense universe and pick us, in a “You’ll do” kind of way, as if we were just about the best available option. No, he MADE us for this. With all our quirks and limitations, human beings are designed with a crown of glory in mind, carriers of his image formed from dust.

“When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and stars
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honour.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet…

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

(Psalm 8:3-6 & 9, NIV)
